Once in a Forest: A Parable by Adriana Pernetz is the story of the animals who lived in a great big land. They did not like each other, they did not understand each other, and would always fight. Each animal had many questions to ask but they did not dare to ask. The little baby bear could dance, sing, and bake delicious bread. He could climb up and down the trees, and he would roll down into the pastures of flowers below and help the hardworking bees with their daily chores. One day while he was walking down the forest road, he met a lonely duck who looked so lost and tired. The Little Duck quacked and the Baby Bear growled. When Mama Bear came, Baby Bear showed her how he learned to quack from his new friend, Little Duck. The bear and the duck took their friendship to the forest and showed the rest of the animals how to embrace peace, love, and compassion.
Once in a Forest is a beautiful story of accepting each other's differences; it is also a story about friendship and kindness. The illustrations are lively and vibrant and they bring the story to life. The message is insightful and it is a good story to help children understand that it is important to accept the differences of others and appreciate them for what they are. Tutors, educators, and parents will find the story of Baby Bear and Little Duck useful in helping children understand that they can still be friends in spite of their differences.
