On The Path with Preston Shank: A Great American Novelette (Featuring the bonus short story Shut Up and Pick Cotton) is a work of fiction in the interpersonal drama and slice-of-life subgenres. It is best suited to the mature adult reading audience and was penned by author Garland B. Johnson. Set in 2009 in Bastion, Alabama, we meet our titular character Preston Shank at a crossroads in his life, when he has come to the realization that he ought to change his ways. What starts as a conscious decision to change sparks a wild chain of events that rocket him through forty-eight hours which will alter his life forever.
It can be difficult to deliver a slice-of-life type of fiction that appeals to all readers, but the more deeply you read into the life of Preston Shank, the more accustomed you become to his charms. Author Garland B. Johnson has a wonderful knack for narrative quality for it always feels as though the story is being told to you by a good friend, very much like you’ve sat down at the bus stop with Forrest Gump to hear his life’s tale from start to finish. The plot events flow well from one to the next, and it’s the realism of the characters’ attitudes and dialogue that keeps us grounded even when some quite shocking and unbelievable things start to happen. Overall, fans of Southern fiction, personal dramas, and engaging character narratives are sure to find much to enjoy in On The Path with Preston Shank.
