Why do people travel? And how does it impact one's life? With On the Face of It, Andrew Corbley takes a deep dive into an activity humans have participated in since their first steps out of Africa -- traveling. In this book, the author explains how our perception of the world changes from experiencing new and foreign places. Travelers who roam the world come from a wide range of backgrounds with different objectives in their hearts. Corbley touches upon how technology has changed the traveling experience in modern times with the advent of mobile phones, Google Maps, etc. He also examines the distinct epigenetic changes that pass through generations in people living in extreme places, the impact of colonization, the intermingling of different cultures through mass migration, the interdependent relationship between travel and religion, and much more.
On the Face of It is not your typical travelogue. Instead, this book offers readers a thorough analysis of the act of traveling itself and how it pertains to human society throughout history. According to Andrew Corbley, despite technological advancements and the ever-changing environment, travel remains the great leveler that still pervades the human-to-human connection. Corbley shares some of his own experiences while traveling to places like Ghana and China, focusing on the cultural differences and the world outlooks that set them apart. The author also examines how ethnic, cultural, and linguistic differences shaped modern nations and the world at large. After finishing this book, you might find yourself struck by a feeling of curiosity and adventure to see different places, cultures, and people. I very much enjoyed the book and can't recommend it highly enough.
