When Katie returns from Rumspringa and thinks back to her meeting with JB “Bull,” where she learned that there is a Mennonite community in Texas, she prays and believes that she must leave her loving family and head there at once. Katie’s mother begs her not to go and she knows how much she will miss her twin sister Annie and fiance Peter, but nevertheless she starts off on what will turn out to be an amazing trip. Her first encounter is with a pack of hungry coyotes and that is only the beginning of her adventure. Peter soon arrives in his buggy and becomes her protector and guide, and provides the romance. The trip has happy times, like her sister Annie joining them and also finding love, but more often than not they are faced with bad things such as sickness, gunslingers, crazy men, a rabid animal, and fire. Can they endure all of the trials and tribulations and finally arrive in Amarillo to begin their new life in Old Amarillo, Amish Journeys #1 by Sara Barnard?
I really enjoyed this book very much. I was transported back to 1890 and traveled from Indiana to Amarillo on an exciting adventure along with Katie and Peter in the wonderfully written Old Amarillo, Amish Journeys #1. It had all of the ingredients to make it a great read – history, adventure, love, friendship and more. Sara Barnard has hit the mark and I can’t wait to read Old Santa Fe, Amish Journeys #2 to follow the lives of Katie, Peter, Annie and Crackerjack. Please read this one if you are a western, romance, or historical fiction lover; you will not be disappointed.
