This week I’ve been diving into the world of writing novels, thanks to Stefani Milan’s excellent non-fiction guide to writing your first book. Oh, the Stories You Will Write: A Motivational Guide to Empower Aspiring Authors is an updated and expanded version of the original text. This guide will take anyone from aspiration right the way through to publication as it covers how to get started, keep going, finish the manuscript, and then navigate the world of self-publishing. It would be easy to assume that the entire experience of the literary craft could be too vast to explore with any meaningful depth in a single book, but Milan effortlessly proves that assumption wrong with an accessible and comprehensive tutor for anyone who has dreamed of writing for themselves.
Two aspects of this work make it particularly stand out from its peers in the field of encouraging aspiring writers. The first is the thoroughness with which each step of the journey is discussed by an author with insight and experience at her fingertips. The second aspect is the distinctive voice in which Stefani Milan writes, never positioning herself as a professor standing over us whilst we learn, but as an experienced writer in the trenches alongside us. The anecdotes about the writing process glisten with authenticity as Milan consistently demonstrates how they can relate to us. This is a journey that the author and reader will undertake together which gives Oh, the Stories You Will Write a firm feeling of moral support for the reader as they undertake their first writing project, all whilst ensuring that the more technical guidance is rigorous and insightful.
