In Odyssey Rising, Theo and Sam are friends. They're also young space explorers, sent on a mission of learning and study. Earth no longer exists and the remaining humans live in spacecrafts, looking for another planet they can call home. It has yet to be found. But Theo, undergoing his final exam, discovers something on the planet that they have been orbiting. Bones. The specimen is brought on board their spacecraft for further study and, in the process, a deadly organism infects Sam, Theo, Ravi (Theo's younger brother), Ellie, and their dog, a Siberian Husky called Harry Wolf.

As a means to quarantine the illness that rapidly takes over their bodies, the infected young explorers (and the dog) are evacuated to the planet on which the infection was found. This is when the adventure really begins and the reader follows the friends through some pretty scary scenes and encounters with unusual living creatures before a cure is found, but not before whatever the infection really is takes the life of one of their friends. But is Sam really dead? He keeps sending his friends text messages, even though he's been buried for days.

The rescue space ship appears and the adults believe that the young explorers have discovered a new world, a New Acadia, on which to settle. Have they? Author Michael T. Best certainly leaves the reader wondering if there's more to this adventure than finding and settling a new world. There is lots of action in this adventure that will appeal to young sci-fi readers. The author interweaves strong friendships and some sibling rivalry to make the characters seem all too real.
