Nowhere for Christmas by Heather Gray is a laugh out loud funny story that kept me reading long into the night! Imagine getting an assignment that will take you on a road trip to Nowhere for Christmas? Well, that's actually Nowhere, OK. Avery Weston had planned on taking her fifteen-year-old son, Eli, skiing for Christmas, but her boss had other ideas; he assigned her to take an eight-hour road trip to the town of Nowhere for Christmas. If that isn't enough, she will be traveling with Gavin, a photojournalist whom she knows very little about. What should have been a simple trip turns into a major excursion when one thing after the other happens to their rental car, which allows them to meet several quirky characters along the way. One thing's for certain, the trip to Nowhere will be one that the trio will never forget.
Nowhere for Christmas is such a fun story. Heather Gray's writing is a visual delight. I could just imagine that ratty little hatchback chugging down the highway, and when she said the car was held together with duct tape and paper clips, I couldn't stop laughing. Honestly, though, that's how the entire story went; there were so many humorous situations I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. It seemed like there was one calamity after the other, each one funnier than the last. I felt as if I was actually along for the ride on this wacky road trip.
Along with the humor, though, there are relationships. It was a joy to see the relationship between Avery and Eli; it wasn't always perfect but it was real. Eli had to be one of my favorite characters - he was a fun loving, well adjusted fifteen-year-old boy, who was often funny without trying to be. The relationship between Avery and Gavin was well paced, and so sweet - well, most of the time it was sweet; occasionally they did clash, but those scenes provided a sense of realism. If you're looking for a good clean read that's filled with humor and great characters, why not let Heather Gray take you on a road trip to Nowhere for Christmas. One of the funniest Christmas adventures I have ever read.
