Not Your Child by Lis Angus has a shocking prologue that describes a motor accident in which the parents were killed and the baby seat was empty. Years later, Daniel Kazan sees two girls in the park. One child reminds him of his deceased daughter. Daniel follows Maddy home in the hopes that she is his granddaughter. Although he didn’t pose a threat, Emma’s parents insist on contacting the police. Meanwhile, Daniel has initiated his own set of inquiries. Maddy’s mother reacts in an over-protective and aggressive fashion, causing the confused child to run away from home. Maddy seeks refuge with Daniel, but will she remain safe if he suspects she is not really “Hannah”?

Not Your Child by Lis Angus was a clever thriller that tapped deep into human emotion. At first, the character of Daniel appeared reasonable and I felt sympathetic. I liked the suspense created as his case appeared to grow more convincing. I shivered when the author began to make the character less appealing. I questioned his decision to lock Maddy inside his house after she had gone to him willingly. Some of the words floating around in his head seemed creepy even though they were attributed to the nagging of his deceased wife. On the other hand, the mother’s concern for her daughter was always genuine, and I understood her panic. The cunning narrative puzzled me, wondering what ingenious device would be found to explain everything. The book kept me interested all the way through and made me think about grief and its effect on the human mind.
