Marci is scared. Her father is home, and yet another time he is drunk, mean, and beating her mom. So Marci decides it is time to climb out of the window to keep from getting in the firing line of her dad. She runs to a neighbor, the one who had the dog that Marci had gotten attached to. That was a blessing, because the dog keeping her father away is the only reason he didn't kill Marci. Being furious, her dad left on his motorcycle and she ran home to check on her mom, only to find out that mom had been stabbed by her dad. For days, Marci did everything she can to take care of her mom, but she just kept getting worse. She couldn’t go to the cops. They wouldn’t really help her and her mom, would they? Even when the neighbor and the cops came to their house, they didn’t think anyone was at home, so they left. Finally, after her mom got so bad that she was barely breathing, Marci ran for help from the old man neighbor, and the boy was glad she did. The nice old man stayed right with Marci, taking her to the hospital and staying there to help protect her and her mom from her dad. After moving in with the old man’s daughter, her mom began to heal, and finally was able to make the choice to leave and go find her brother, who had taken off a few years before because of their dad’s abusive behavior toward him. How will their life turn out? Will Marci and her family be free from her abusive dad?
“Not the Worst that Could Happen” is a heart-wrenching story of a family living with the horrors of an abusive dad and husband. I actually cried as I read about this husband almost killing his wife. And I was so afraid that Marci wouldn’t go for help in time, but thanks to the loving neighbor, they found more help than they ever thought possible. And I really liked the older neighbor and the care he gave Marci and her mom. He was so sweet to them, taking care of their every need. This is a wonderful story, and one that needs to be told. I highly recommend this book to anyone in an abusive situation, or anyone who knows someone in an abusive situation. If this story helps one person speak out about being abused, it would be worth it. One thing that is really lacking here is editing. This book is in serious need of professional editing in order to be a success. This is a very good book, one that I thoroughly enjoyed!
