Not That I Recall by Adam Clemente is a humorous but strange tale. Ray is something of an idiot, a child-like man who is obsessed with pop tarts – but not the blueberry ones. Those are worse than no pop tart at all! When his wife dies, even though he often forgot she was there when she was alive, Ray’s life becomes even more unpredictable as he bumbles his way around, fainting frequently and arguing with things that just can’t argue back. With such a short attention span, Ray constantly finds himself in places he doesn’t remember getting to as he searches for pop tarts and somewhere to lie down, all the while stumbling, perhaps unknowingly, through all sorts of danger. And then there’s the opossum …
Not That I Recall by Adam Clemente was one of those books that made my jaw drop to the floor! Not only was it one of the most surprising books I have read this year, it was laugh-out-loud funny and, in all honesty, just unbelievable! This is a strange story, totally unpredictable and going off on all sorts of tangents that just don’t make sense. If you are looking for a straightforward, run of the mill, easy read, don’t bother with this one. This is going to take you on a wonderful journey through the mind of a man who is more like a child, Forrest Gump kind of springs to mind at places in the story! It’s going to take you on a ride that you won’t want to get off until you get to the end – and what an end it is! I will say that this is not for everyone, you do need a certain, perhaps slightly warped, sense of humor to appreciate what Adam Clemente has pulled off here, but I guarantee you will enjoy every second of it!
