Northfield by Calvin Fisher is set in a post-apocalyptic world and follows the life of a righteous man who is tested beyond his limits. When Mark Northfield lost his wife, he made a promise to live and not lose the best of himself to this crazy world. With these promises in his heart, Mark works as a mercenary with an organization called the Network. His usual missions are protecting people; however, his employers trick him into taking a completely different mission. Instead of protecting the person in his charge, he needs to assassinate them. If he fails to kill the person, Mark will be killed. His only option is to kill or be killed. But this is not how Mark works, and it goes against everything he stands for. What will Mark do? Can he find a loophole in this and save his life? Or is there something bigger waiting to happen, and Mark has no idea?

The suspense is thick in this story! Mark is one of those rare characters who are human in everything they do. Usually, the characters in science fiction novels are too far removed from humanity for the reader to make a connection with them. Not Mark. Mark is imperfectly human. He is stubborn, kind to a fault, and ready to fight for the ones who cannot protect themselves. Northfield is fantastic. I believe Calvin Fisher has done a phenomenal job of creating an environment that is perfect for the characters to thrive and drive the story forward. Mark remains at the center of the story, and that does not change as the story progresses. Reading this story was a very visual experience, and it is very cinematic. The steady flow of action and suspense hooks readers and makes it an adrenaline-inducing, absolutely perfect reading experience!

Northfield by Calvin Fisher is a post-apocalyptic science fiction novel. For the last decade, the earth has been smothered, suffocating in a cloud of neon death. Survivors do what they must to survive, hardening their hearts against anyone and everything. Only Mark Northfield is the exception. A lone mercenary, he travels with the memory of his dead wife, remembering the two last promises he ever made her – never to let life slip away and never be worse than the man she married. Northfield is being blackmailed to take part in an assassination mission though, making it hard to keep those vows. If he walks away, he will die and his choice is tough – accept death or corruption. Which road will he travel? And how long before he realizes that his assassination target is the key to saving the world?

Northfield by Calvin Fisher is an entrancing post-apocalyptic story with a fascinating plot split into three, each part telling its own story and leading seamlessly to the next. The first part sets the scene, describes the post-apocalyptic planet covered in poison gas, and leaves you in no doubt as to the desperation of the survivors, all necessary for the next two parts of the book. His descriptive writing transports you there, joining his excellently developed characters, especially Northfield. With lots of action and suspense, the final part of this book moves fast, building the pace before the explosive finale. Throughout the story, you get to know Northfield as a person, and follow him through the many twists and turns this unique and fresh take on the genre offers. If dystopian novels are your thing, you will love this book but if this is your first time reading one, Northfield is a great introduction.

A man trying to eke a living in a post-apocalyptic world gets caught up in a scheme to save the citizens of what was once a city in the Midwestern United States from the tyranny of a powerful network in the thrilling dystopian novel, Northfield by Calvin Fisher. For ten years after its release, a deadly gas covers the surface of the earth, killing everyone who takes a breath. Mark Northfield is a mercenary for Network, the agency that has made it possible for humans to survive the lethal gas. Mark hires out from Network, taking contracts to escort and protect delivery trucks and individuals as they travel across the countryside. Tricked into taking an assassin job, Mark is in a moral quandary. He doesn't believe in killing people other than in self-defense, but if he doesn't fulfill his mission within an allotted time, Network will send the Death Corp to assassinate him. In a twist of fate, when Mark meets his target, his life turns upside down. The encounter alters Mark's perceptions of the toxic vapor, and he resolves to eliminate the deadly threat. Can he stay out of the Death Corp's gun sights long enough to fulfill his destiny?

Depicting the extraordinary feats of nanobots, Northfield by Calvin Fisher is an exciting post-apocalyptic dystopian novel with a science fiction overtone. Superbly written, it is a thrilling and suspenseful story that had me sitting on the edge of my seat from the first page until the last. Caught up in the intensity and drama surrounding the characters and their dilemmas, I couldn't put the book down until I reached the final scene. With a dynamic plot, action-packed scenes, and a well-fabricated story world, it is a riveting science-fiction tale that will delight and entertain science-fiction fans from young adults on up.

Northfield by Calvin Fisher is a science fiction drama with a classic feel. Full of internal conflict and external drama, its main character is Mark Northfield, who lives in a future time on earth when the world is literally suffocating due to clouds bringing a neon death. The drive to survive causes everyone to be self-centered and callous. But mercenary Northfield isn't like that. Living on the memories of his deceased wife, he vows to keep two promises he made to her: Keep on living and never change. But an opponent is out for revenge, and blackmail enters the picture, which puts Mark on a mission involving assassination. The promises to his wife may be broken, he will be killed if he refuses the mission, but he stands to lose his humanity. There is something beyond this dilemma, however...

There is something positive in this story that I like, even though it's about dire consequences. Fisher has an incredible talent for molding lifelike characters and responses, and you are magnetically drawn to Mark Northfield. In a way, he is your conscience as you read, and you wonder if you would make the same decisions he does. I like the supporting characters as well, and the inner dialogue is realistic and energetic. The author's worldbuilding is impressive, the descriptions lively and detailed, with a plot that unfolds in sections. For a science fiction novel with lots of pathos and drama, please don't miss Northfield by Calvin Fisher. You will love this character.

Calvin Fisher’s Northfield is an exploration of what the world might end up becoming as a result of human folly. In a post-apocalyptic scenario where the air is saturated by noxious gas, Mark Northfield is a mercenary with a heart who tries to keep the promises that he made to his late wife. When he receives an assassination mission to take down a target named Nathaniel Salb, with no given reason for the purpose of the liquidation, he finds himself torn between remaining loyal to his moral vows and completing the mission that will get him killed if he refuses. Unknown to him, his target may well be the key to giving the world new hope and making it rise from its ashes. Salb holds the key to a dispersal device that could eradicate the stagnant gas in the air.

Calvin Fisher has created a compassionate character in Mark Northfield operating in a bleak landscape that is devoid of hope. As the poisonous gas has turned the world into a wasteland, the hero develops as you get to know him in the daily grind of his preoccupation, working as a mercenary for hire who prefers cargo escort jobs. Fisher presents a hypothesis that it is still possible to maintain one’s sense of humanity despite living in a chaotic world fraught with danger around every corner. As the real world experiences a global pandemic along with global warming and political tensions, the premise is almost plausible. The writing in Northfield is direct and easy to process, and there is no mistaking that the horrors presented in this novel may well be our future if we do not get our act together.
