His descriptive writing transports you there, joining his excellently developed characters, especially Northfield. With lots of action and suspense, the final part of this book moves fast, building the pace before the explosive finale. Throughout the story, you get to know Northfield as a person, and follow him through the many twists and turns this unique and fresh take on the genre offers. If dystopian novels are your thing, you will love this book but if this is your first time reading one, Northfield is a great introduction.

Full of internal conflict and external drama, its main character is Mark Northfield, who lives in a future time on earth when the world is literally suffocating due to clouds bringing a neon death. The drive to survive causes everyone to be self-centered and callous. But mercenary Northfield isn't like that. Living on the memories of his deceased wife, he vows to keep two promises he made to her: Keep on living and never change. But an opponent is out for revenge, and blackmail enters the picture, which puts Mark on a mission involving assassination. The promises to his wife may be broken, he will be killed if he refuses the mission, but he stands to lose his humanity. There is something beyond this dilemma, however...

There is something positive in this story that I like, even though it's about dire consequences. Fisher has an incredible talent for molding lifelike characters and responses, and you are magnetically drawn to Mark Northfield. In a way, he is your conscience as you read, and you wonder if you would make the same decisions he does. I like the supporting characters as well, and the inner dialogue is realistic and energetic. The author's worldbuilding is impressive, the descriptions lively and detailed, with a plot that unfolds in sections. For a science fiction novel with lots of pathos and drama, please don't miss Northfield by Calvin Fisher. You will love this character.

In a post-apocalyptic scenario where the air is saturated by noxious gas, Mark Northfield is a mercenary with a heart who tries to keep the promises that he made to his late wife. When he receives an assassination mission to take down a target named Nathaniel Salb, with no given reason for the purpose of the liquidation, he finds himself torn between remaining loyal to his moral vows and completing the mission that will get him killed if he refuses. Unknown to him, his target may well be the key to giving the world new hope and making it rise from its ashes. Salb holds the key to a dispersal device that could eradicate the stagnant gas in the air.

Calvin Fisher has created a compassionate character in Mark Northfield operating in a bleak landscape that is devoid of hope. As the poisonous gas has turned the world into a wasteland, the hero develops as you get to know him in the daily grind of his preoccupation, working as a mercenary for hire who prefers cargo escort jobs. Fisher presents a hypothesis that it is still possible to maintain one’s sense of humanity despite living in a chaotic world fraught with danger around every corner. As the real world experiences a global pandemic along with global warming and political tensions, the premise is almost plausible. The writing in Northfield is direct and easy to process, and there is no mistaking that the horrors presented in this novel may well be our future if we do not get our act together.
