"No Villains, No Heroes" by Thomas Moore is a novel based on the true events that took place in the year 1912 in the Carroll County Courthouse, Hillsville, Virginia, an event that took a once close-knit family and turned them into outlaws. Floyd Allen was what one would call the head of the Allen clan well known in the area and disliked my many. Convicted of assault of a deputy there was not much doubt that the court case was politically rigged in order to put Mr. Allen in prison for a while. When reaching into his coat they opened fire on Mr. Allen and the courthouse gun battle erupted which ultimately led to five killed and seven wounded and the Allens headed to the hills. Who was the real victim here and who were the heroes? Was it the Baldwin Felts who tracked the Allens down or was it the court that thought they brought down justice?
Written in a documentary form, the book takes the reader back through history and brings to life an event that is not much talked about today except around Virginia. I felt as though the book was very well-written and that the author was very knowledgeable of the people who lived there and those involved in the case. I liked the way the book is written since it really brings the characters to life whether they are the fictional ones from the author's mind or actual persons involved in the incident. It is an easy to read, short book. If you are a person who likes to dip back into the history of court cases, then I feel you will enjoy reading "No Villains, No Heroes" and decide who was right and who was wrong. You will also wonder who were the heroes and who were the villains.
