In No Good Deed by Rosemary Reeve, we again meet Jack Hart, the litigator who works out of a prestigious law firm in Seattle and his best friend Mark, plus Harmony whom he would very much like to marry, and his rather undisciplined but loveable dog Betsy. In this story, it is Mark who gets into trouble when he is accused of murdering his next-door neighbour. While on the surface the case appears cut and dried, it is far more complicated. Mark’s estranged father just happens to be one of the largest drug barons in the city, Mark himself has a juvenile record, no crime attorney is prepared to defend him and the judge appointed to the case wants it over and done with before the elections are held. The deck is stacked against Mark from every direction and it is up to Jack and Harmony to ensure justice is done.
This is the third book I’ve read in the Jack Hart series and author Rosemary Reeve keeps up the pace, thrills and excitement in No Good Deed. I have loved all of them so far and I’m looking forward to reading the last one. While there is plenty of action with bodies falling at regular intervals, the violence is not gratuitous. The characters are so real you feel you know them and care about them. The twists and turns take the reader by surprise; nothing is what it seems. I checked out the author’s biography and I was not surprised to see she is an attorney and her knowledge of the law makes this series very authentic. I particularly enjoyed the courtroom scenes, as Harmony takes on the role of defence for Mark despite the fact she has only worked in corporate law. The attention to detail is impressive. I can’t recommend this series highly enough.
