Never Retreat is a dramatic work of women’s fiction from author Bonnie McCune. The story centers on Raye Soto, a feisty Latino woman in her thirties. Despite an early failed relationship that left her with a now-teenage son, Raye has succeeded in the business world and got herself a relatively high position in a telecommunications company. When rumours of layoffs and cuts start to circulate, however, Raye knows that her next corporate retreat is essential to show off her talent. The only problem is Des Emmett, a smooth talking office newbie whose machismo and need to succeed is getting in Raye’s way. It literally takes a natural disaster to help the two settle their differences.
A battle of the sexes for the modern age, Never Retreat is a women’s fiction novel which is written with great compassion and understanding for both genders, somewhat unusual these days. I loved Raye’s attitude and her motivations, and even though she can’t help acknowledging Des’s outer perfections, she is able to overcome the kind of emotions that trapped her in her youth. It’s only when the pair are pushed to their limits and stuck together that they see the ways their differences can combine to achieve great things together. More than a love story, Bonnie McCune has created a tale of partnership and equality, sure to remind us of both contemporary gender struggles and hope for the future of men and women as a united, beneficial partnership. Overall, I’d highly recommend Never Retreat to readers looking for an intelligent love story.
