Never a Dull Moment: A Teacher's Memoir of Her Very Special Students by Teresa Ann Holmgren was an educational experience. In the book, Holmgren shares some stories of the students that have made a lasting impression on her. Some stories are cute and some are sad. It was nice to see what kind of students make an impression on a teacher.
I chose to read Never a Dull Moment because, although I am not a teacher, I do volunteer in a classroom. Just like Holmgren, I have had students make a lasting impression on me. I was curious to read Holmgren's stories. I enjoyed all the stories in this book. Like students, a few stood out more than others. My favorite story in this book was "Silence is Not Always Golden". I was literally cheering for Scott. A moment like that in a teacher's life is truly amazing and I am glad that Holmgren was the one to witness it. Jeff's story was an eye-opening experience. I feel more schools should take the snack thing into consideration. I am sure test scores would be better if they did. Mark's story broke my heart. I am sure every teacher has had a Mark in their life. I know I had one just from being a volunteer.
Being a teacher is not for everyone. However, it was truly Holmgren's calling. My daughter was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome this year. I can only hope that she will have a teacher as patient and caring as Holmgren. I will be recommending this book to all the teachers I know. I will also be asking them about the students that have made an impression in their life. I look forward to reading more of Holmgren's stories in the future.
