The wallpaper on my cellphone shows the Nauset Lighthouse on the shores of Cape Cod. Once a year we vacation there and enjoy taking side trips to see the lighthouses along the coast. I was curious to read Nauset Light: A Personal Legacy by Mary E. Daubenspeck and Timothy H. Daubenspeck. Unfortunately, Mary Daubenspeck died years before this book was published. She was an accomplished writer who kept a journal of her mission to save the Nauset Lighthouse. Her brother, Timothy, took up the task of assembling his sister’s journal entries for readers to learn how Mary, with help from The Nauset Light Preservation Society and the Cape Cod National Seashore, kept the lighthouse from certain destruction due to erosion of the shoreline as well as saving the Nauset Light Keeper’s house. When Mary bought the property from the previous owner, she promised to preserve it so anyone could enjoy it for years to come. Mary had many generous offers to sell the property, but she kept her promise because of her love and appreciation for it.
The reader is treated to Mary's journal in real time as she describes what it is like to live in the Keeper’s House near the famous lighthouse. Her daily descriptions are moving and give the reader an appreciation for this beautiful place. Is it too costly to save the Nauset Lighthouse and the Keeper’s house? Or just save the lighthouse? Timothy Daubenspeck does a good job of organizing his sister’s writings from the 1980s through the 1990s. Using his late sister’s journal entries, as well as his thoughts, the reader learns how Nauset Lighthouse was physically moved from its original spot to where it stands today and how Mary led the effort to save her Keeper’s House by moving it as well. Some terrific photographs help tell the story. Thanks to her efforts, the Nauset Lighthouse and the surrounding property stand fully restored and maintained by The Nauset Light Preservation Society for all to visit and enjoy. I recommend Nauset Light to anyone interested in this subject and the efforts of an extraordinary woman.
