Nature Study Buddies is the third book in Leigh's Wheelie Adventures series by Charlene McIver and is illustrated by Claudia Gadotti. It’s nature study week and Leigh, Cosmo, and Tara have chosen to study some nocturnal animals in Leigh’s backyard. But if they want to see possums or bats someone will need to climb into the tree. Cosmo and Tara devise a clever plan to get Leigh into the tree without his wheelchair – the classic pulley system. However, an overprotective magpie threatens the whole operation and the kids decide it’s better if Leigh stays on the ground. Later that night Leigh feels a bit left out as Cosmo and Tara have fun climbing the big tree. Slowly they hear the choir of nocturnal animal calls and Leigh gets to see all the animals come out for the night on the ground. It turns out that Cosmo and Tara were the ones who missed out!
Nature Study Buddies is an uplifting children’s picture book lovingly written by Charlene McIver. Charlene narrates an optimistic story about diversity and friendship. Leigh is a child with a disability and has to use a wheelchair to move around. Because of this, he cannot take part in all the activities that able-bodied kids can. Charlene’s message is hopeful and encouraging as she shows that just because you might have some limitations, you can still have fun and contribute equally. Claudia Gadotti illustrates the study buddies’ adventures. Her watercolor drawings are soft and beautiful to bring out the emotional message of the story. This is a wonderful book for any child to read, feel special, and learn about inclusivity, confidence, and friendship.
