Native Heart is a work of intriguing paranormal and mystery fiction penned by author Lori Hines. This visionary and nature-immersed novel takes place in Arizona among some of the most beautiful scenery in the world: its Painted Desert and Petrified Forest. It is here that the psychic investigator Ahulani Mahelona takes up a new case when her intuition strikes and the spirits of the dead speak to her once more. The case expands as visions from this world and worlds beyond take Ahulani over, transporting her further than she ever thought possible, and providing her with the most challenging case she has ever faced in all her years of investigation and honing her skills.
One of the things I enjoyed most about the character of Aluhani was her cultural sensitivities from her own mixed heritage, which made her very open to others around her and the belief systems they held dear. It was also great to see an older heroine in place in such a deep and intriguing psychic mystery: a woman of great experience who is truly put to the test despite her immense skills. It’s also clear that author Lori Hines has a real passion for Arizona, its spirituality and its beauty, as the attention to detail placed on locations, their history and significance was immersive and so enjoyable. What results is a slow-burning mystery which has plenty of deep character development and atmospheric power to keep you reading on. I would certainly recommend Native Heart to readers seeking a cozy mystery that still packs a psychic punch.
