Nad of Nadide by Wagih Abu-Rish is a romance novel set against the backdrop of the political turmoil plaguing Turkey in the early 1980s. The son of accomplished doctors, an Irish Catholic and a Muslim Palestinian immigrant, Fareed inherited the best of both worlds, becoming an intelligent young man of his own. After breaking up with his Lebanese girlfriend, Dania, Fareed meets the beautiful Nandide (Nad) at a university in Turkey. Unbeknownst to him, Nad is the daughter of General Ali Hikmet, who has an inordinate amount of control over his daughter's life. As Fareed and Nad fall in love, they unwittingly embroil themselves in a political conspiracy where both end up being kidnapped and held for ransom on two separate occasions. Meanwhile, an assassination attempt is made on Hikmet's life. Can the two lovers find a way to be together?
Author Wagih Abu-Rish tells a captivating tale of two star-crossed lovers who find themselves caught amidst a brewing rebellion against the government. Nad of Nadide is filled with romance, suspense, and political intrigue. The narrative is a breeze to go through, with a fast-paced plot full of twists and turns that you never see coming. Fareed and Nad are the two central characters around which the narrative revolves around. Aside from them, I found Fareed's mother, Fiona, to be the most developed character. Abu-Rish does a stellar job of capturing the political landscape of early 1980s Turkey. I will recommend this book to readers who love suspenseful romance stories.
