Mystic Tides is a romance novel written by C.J. Godwin. Seventeen-year-old Aden Wilder had just finished celebrating his birthday with friends on the beach. With a bonfire ablaze, Aden bids farewell to his friends. He was also leaving Alaska to live with his Aunt Tess and cousin, Alana, after his father had received a big promotion which would take him out to sea for many months. When he reaches Florida, Aden realizes immediately that he needs new clothes as the heat is stifling. He also discovers that Aunt Tess is Pagan and has quite a collection of gems and several altars set up inside the apartment, which is a stark contrast to his strict Christian upbringing. As school starts, Aden finds himself drawn to the shy and beautiful Kailani. Soon after, Aden discovers he is an empath and that his attraction to Kailani is more than just infatuation when magnetic energies seem to constantly pull them together. As Aden’s powers grow, he realizes that Kailani is not just the sweet, beautiful and shy girl he’d fallen in love with, but that she is descended from something bigger than he could have ever imagined.
I very much enjoyed reading a romance novel which incorporated the rituals of the Pagan sabbats and esbats. C.J. Godwin has captured the true essence of a Pagan’s love of Nature with crystal magick, runes, candles and altars, while showing the initial judgement and stigma from a Christian-raised boy when he first encounters it. The youthful feeling that embraced me while reading Mystic Tides was intoxicating. While good and evil play for the opposite teams, this incredible tale shows that sometimes love stirs up the waters so much that fate takes a different course. I thoroughly enjoyed Mystic Tides and recommend this book to those who enjoy the metamorphosis of a toxic romance, tinged with humor, drama, sorrow and regrets. I also suggest that readers keep a box of tissues at hand until the very end.
