My Sister's Secret by Tracy Buchanan was hard to put down. The story follows the lives of four women. Three sisters named Charity, Faith and Hope, along with Charity’s daughter, Willow. Willow grew up never knowing the truth about her family. When she discovers a secret in an old purse that belonged to her mother, she starts to look for answers.
I love it when a book has plot twists and surprises in it. My Sister's Secret has all that and a little more. The characters all had very different personalities. Hope was abrasive and at first I did not much like her. However, that is exactly how Buchanan wanted me to feel. I loved that Willow was not your typical “pretty girl” character. Buchanan had her rockin’ tattoos and short hair. Charity was a complex character. At times she was a bit annoying because she could not seem to make up her mind. I related to her in that field.
I liked how Buchanan exposed all the secrets in the family slowly. At first I thought that a big secret was forgotten about, but all was revealed in the end. I thought I had some things figured out, but I was mistaken. The ending left me in shock and I had to go back and read the first few chapters again to see if I missed a clue. This is one book I will not soon forget!
Buchanan is correct in that the ending of this book was “bittersweet.” I did feel as if I was saying goodbye to a dear friend. I was left with the loneliness that only finishing a good book can give you. This is the first of Buchanan’s work I have read. I look forward to reading more of her books in the future.
