Patricia Allieri’s My Pig Thinks He’s a Panda is a delightful picture book with hand-drawn pictures by Novel Varius. It is an imaginative journey about a pet pig who doesn’t quite fit into a pig’s mold. In it, the girl in the book shows the young reader all the panda-like things her pet pig does. From climbing trees to trying to eat bamboo, it seems the girl has to constantly work to keep her “Piggie-Panda” out of trouble—except during its three naps, of course. Does Piggie-Panda have any piglike qualities?

My Pig Thinks He’s a Panda is a story that blends fact and fiction. While explaining the things pandas do through Piggie-Panda, the pig also talks and lets us know this is a work of fiction. Not only does Patricia Allieri use simple words for early-elementary-aged children, but the pictures by Novel Varius are charming. The pig gets into all sorts of strange situations in his pursuit of acting like a panda, including rolling somersaults, but the images correspond well with how you would expect a pig to perform these feats. Young children will laugh at all the pig’s antics. Although this is not meant to be a non-fiction book, there are pig facts and panda facts at the end of the book, such as the fact you can train pigs to do tricks. The overall pacing of the story is great, and it can teach children many facts about pandas—such as they occasionally eat fish and that they can climb trees.
