My Name on a Grain of Rice by Richard Voigt is a slice-of-life drama novel that follows the story of Harry Travers, a young man trying to find a place for himself in life. Tired of the lifestyle envisioned by his parents, Harry Travers leaves his high-paying job at a software startup and, alongside his co-worker and friend Sterling Nesko, joins a piledriving crew under foreman Lloyd Sollis. Inexperienced and out of his depth, Harry has a hard time adjusting to his new job, especially when a confrontation with a co-worker leaves him with a grudge. Complicating matters further is Lloyd's sister Minnie, with whom Harry begins a passionate relationship. However, despite Minnie's wishes, Harry feels reluctant to commit himself to her. But a tragic incident at work changes everything.
Author Richard Voigt tells an absorbing tale of a young man trying to find purpose in his life but struggling to adjust to his circumstances. My Name on a Grain of Rice is a story about self-discovery, about making your own mistakes and carving out the right path for yourself. The narrative is well-paced and feels like a breeze to go through. This is a character-driven drama with nuanced and in-depth characters that have complex layers to their personalities. Harry feels like a real person with conflicting morals. Yet, despite his many flaws, you can't help but root for him. The bittersweet ending only adds charm to the story. If you enjoy well-written slice-of-life stories, this is the book for you.
