A little boy loves his light. It makes him feel safe, both day and night. It makes him feel warm when it shines so bright and gives Mom and Dad a means to see him in the dark after he’s asleep. It’s not unusual to be afraid of the dark. There are so many things we don’t understand when we can’t see them. A loving light is a comfort for everyone, to help them feel safe and secure, even when darkness threatens to consume.
Susie Miles’ preschool picture book, My Friend, The Light, is a sweet, charming story to help the very young feel safe in the dark. The words are simple and to the point. The author uses words that rhyme with light to add a touch of nuance to the story: night, bright, right. The author leads the reader carefully through the connection between the little boy and his light and how it helps and comforts him. It opens the door for young readers to share their feelings about their cherished light and how it helps them get through the long, dark night. Simple phrases like, “Light, you help me feel safe, when I snuggle in bed, nice and tight” and “You’re a good friend right next to me every night” emphasizes the point of comfort. The words are written in a simple, freehand script which adds to the simplicity of the story and important words are boldened in a bright color. Beautifully illustrated and presented with care and compassion.
