My Community by Raven Howell is a story which follows the life of a little girl as she goes through her day and meets all the different people in her community. The story follows everyone from the trash men, mailman, bus drivers, teachers, all the way up to the mayor, who happens to be the little girl's father. The little girl is a small part of her community and one day, when she grows up, she will most likely become a larger part of the community when she gets a job and starts to contribute to it.

The images in My Community, which are by Yeng Yang, are colourful and I think kids will like them. The message within the story is positive and I feel that it teaches children the importance of working with the people around them and how they all contribute to making their community a better place. I would class My Community as educational too. I think since the main character is a young girl that the story would appeal to girls more than boys, but it can be read by both.

My Community would be suitable for the 5-8 age range due to the message and the pictures. I did think that the wording could have been larger and bolder for young readers, as it is very small. I realize that it is more of a picture book, but there is still a story to tell. I would definitely recommend My Community by Raven Howell for home and school libraries.
