My Alaskan Race Told by Huskie Dog by Rich Linville is a dog’s perspective on the Iditarod Sled Race. Huskie Dog will take children along for the ride as mushers lead their teams of dogs along a route that has an important place in Alaskan history. Children will see how dogs are cared for through vet books that the musher uses to keep notes on each dog, which are then used at each checkpoint for vets to check the dogs. The book introduces children to various facts that range from the use of white boots to protect the dogs’ paws to the various tools vital to the mushers such as an ax, spare parts, and snowshoes to make the race easier for both the mushers and the dogs.

The story is paired with a blend of illustrations and photographs that give children a visual of each stage of the race. Photographs of dogs and the route show children exactly what occurs during the race. The images are colorful and vibrant with vivid details that capture the cold conditions while also showcasing the adventure, excitement, and risks of the race. The images also show the various supplies the mushers keep with them. The story is full of facts about dog sledding and the race which includes how marker posts are used to permit the mushers and dogs to stop and rest. The information gives a unique perspective on dog sledding from the fun viewpoint of a dog to educate children about how mushers face the elements and the important supplies every musher needs like extra sleds sent ahead to checkpoints in case of break downs. Rich Linville includes geography that will allow children to see the location of Alaska as well as a map showing the route that mushers take to give a well-rounded lesson. My Alaskan Race Told by Huskie Dog is an amazing resource that gives an inside look at the Iditarod Race complete with facts, history, and stunning visuals.
