Muslim, Christian, Jew - "I Do": A Memoir by Hazel Wise is the autobiography of a woman who married, in exactly the same order, a Muslim, a Christian, and a Jew. Daughter of an Anglican missionary, Hazel grows up with her four siblings on a remote sandy mission in India’s Nagaland. Always the marrying type, as a young girl, she dreams of marrying Festus, owner of the only store in the mission who regularly gives her sweeties when she and her sister get hold of some candy money. The family, however, moves to Papua New Guinea where she meets Amir, her first husband. And as she searches for a happy ending, she marries the Christian Michael and Jewish David and learns to cook along the way.
Muslim, Christian, Jew - "I Do" by Hazel Wise is a very engaging story about a woman who married into Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. Hazel's wry sense of humor shines forth in her creative writing style and this makes the memoir a very entertaining read. At the same time, it gives the reader helpful information on marriage in Islam, Christianity, and Judaism, which surprisingly illustrates the commonality of marriage rather than the differences of dogma. Muslim, Christian, Jew - "I Do" is a story of love, separation, divorce, and one woman's interesting encounter with the world's three major religions. It is also a story a woman, who, just like all of us, wants to find that elusive happiness at the end of the rainbow. A very good read!
