Murder Under White: A Mystery Novel by Roger DeBeers, Sr. is a compelling murder mystery that will keep you up at night. Margarita Benica Arguello O'Brien is a Latina detective who, along with Andy Pick, an ex-government operative whose best days are behind him, looks into the murder of a congressman who was pro-life and killed at the abortion clinic where his teenage daughter was seeking their services. Once the two investigators get their hands on the case, questions swirl: Who killed the man? And why? Who else could be in the crosshairs? Left by the authorities to their own devices, this pair of sleuths latches on to dirty deeds and more. Are they in over their heads or can they handle it? They have no choice but to get to the bottom of it, seeing that the presidential primary is in ten days, and there is a cover-up underway. Time is not on their side, and they are one step closer to danger with each new revelation.
Murder Under White is a take-no-prisoners kind of novel that rips away the veneer of society and introduces you to an underworld of corruption and deceit. There is a lot to unpack in this heart-pounding story, but it's a delicious dive into a fictional world you can get lost in. From the first tense lines of the opening chapter until the end you will be intrigued by this story. The author is skilled at creating believable characters--Margarita and Andy are unconventional and nicely developed. The plot could be taken from the headlines, the dialogue propels the story forward, and some unexpected twists arise. Some mystery novels can come off as been-there-done-that and so predictable, but this fresh take is a booster shot to the genre. If this is Roger DeBeers' debut novel, readers will be anxiously waiting for more.
