In Murder on the Geneva Express by JB Michaels, Peter Rickman's brother Danny stumbles upon a gruesome scene on a commuter train, turning Mac O'Malley into the main suspect in a murder. Simultaneously, Constable Greene from the magical world responds to an alarm related to forbidden magic use with a crimson skull symbol, escalating the mystery. Mac seeks guidance from his partner, Millie, as they attempt to clear his name while evading Constable Greene's relentless pursuit. Their investigation takes them to Peter Rickman's workplace, uncovering clues, including a mysterious note, and raising concerns as Millie's wand vibrates unexpectedly. As the tension heightens, they seek help from Millie's family and fight to eradicate Mac's prime suspect status and the increasing danger they face.
Urgency and pacing that barrels forward perfectly make Murder on the Geneva Express by JB Michaels one of the most exhilarating fantasy thrillers, with Mac and Millie being hunted down and Mac targeted as a prime suspect in a murder case. The elements of magic add an additional layer to the plot in Michaels's novel through wielders, wands, and dark magic, and the Constabulary and the Coven in a well-structured fantasy world with its own rules and challenges. Still, it is the depth of emotion and camaraderie between Mac and Millie and their complex relationship that make up the solid foundation so necessary in a series. This realism in character dynamics is the key to the balanced, well-rounded storyline that Michaels understands and executes so well. The writing is clean and tight, the social structure in the magic realm and real world is defined, and the mystery-slash-accusations against Mac that force the duo into a unique situation are flawless. Very highly recommended.
