Billy Ray Kincaid, the owner of the BTSN sports network, is a jerk and a crook, but he has Cissy, a sexy young sideline reporter. Rumor has it that BTSN is about to go under. Billy Ray needs something fast. When it is reported that Cissy is being stalked, the news crews are out in force and Billy Ray welcomes the free publicity. Jake Eliam, a part time hand-made baseball bat maker and part time Private Investigator, often depends on his old friend Catfish when times get a little tough. When the Alabama-Georgia game nears, Catfish wants Jake to take a simple case and play bodyguard to Cissy. But, simple does not always mean simple. As the complications grow, Jake must depend on old and new friends if he and his friends are going to survive.
I have to admit that MudCat Moon by Cliff Yeargin is one of the most entertaining books I’ve read in a long time. This one has it all. Not having had the opportunity to read either of the first two books, I found the characterization to be outstanding. Jake and his friends come off as strong, funny, sarcastic, likable and a little strange, or maybe a lot strange. The plot is simple, easy to follow and predictable, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Often a plot doesn’t need dozens of twists and turns to be enjoyable. The reader may know what to expect, but the fun is finding out how to get there. As I read this book, I found myself reading not as a reviewer, but as a fan. That’s about the highest praise I can give.
