Who knew that birds sat on top of the genealogical tree of life? They reign in Mrs. PJ Wigglesworth: The Dancing Spy, a children’s adventure by M.W. Dutton. Penelope Wigglesworth is a shy, clumsy Atlantic Puffin who yearns to be a dancer. After accepting an offer from Professor C.E. Gull to help fulfill her dream, the experiment Professor Gull tries doesn’t go as planned and it changes Penelope. When Albert, her husband, is bird-napped by the Supreme Winged Anarchists against Liberty and Order Worldwide (S.W.A.L.O.W), Penelope attempts to rescue him. But things get worse. The leader of S.W.A.LO.W. happens to be Sasha, a powerful, cold-hearted Siberian Crane. Sasha is bird-bent on controlling the world and wants to eliminate birds who oppose her but needs the Professor’s help.
Birds of a feather flock together until their feathers are ruffled. That happened in the fun adventure titled Mrs. PJ Wigglesworth: The Dancing Spy. It’s a very entertaining story where humans don’t exist, but birds live in the modern world with the latest technology at their wingtips. Spies and lies make this an exciting, cleverly written espionage tale by M.W. Dutton. His warm, descriptive writing makes the story come alive with its collection of bird species and their undercover activities. Penelope is shy but I admire her spunk when she faces danger. I think the chapter titles, such as Love At First Flight, are amusing and I like the illustrations, also done by the author. This book will become a favorite with children as well as adults.
