Mother of the Fallen: The Reforged Story by J.R. Manga is set initially in a Mexican town where we follow Natalia and her mother Rosalia, who, after a traumatic exorcism incident, move to America. Years later, Natalia, now a detective in Seattle, stumbles upon a brutal murder case and a sinister cult that serve to further exacerbate her personal battles. Meanwhile, a catastrophic accident propels the King family into a vortex of depression and revenge, linking them to a dangerous satanic sect. Natalia's quest for truth is aided by Whinny, a store owner with knowledge of satanic rituals, and Vergil, a man with supernatural abilities. As demonic possessions escalate, Natalia tries to adapt to newfound powers and a prophecy that brands her as Lucifer's bride. In her desperate fight to save her son and the world from an imminent evil, Natalia is drawn into the depths of Hell, bracing herself against a prophecy that could alter the balance between good and evil.
Mother of the Fallen by J.R. Manga is a wonderfully deep and layered story that stacks elements of crime, the supernatural, and personal drama like Jenga pieces to examine universal themes of good versus evil, transformation, and resilience. Manga uses Natalia intelligently as a microcosm for larger societal issues, particularly sexism, motherhood, and the trauma of her past, all against a backdrop of demonic possession and cult activities. Juxtaposing mundane human concerns with supernatural events, Manga underscores the strength of the human spirit and the entanglement of emotions amidst the chaos. The novel has some great twists with one that is absolutely dynamite, and I think all readers who are parents and have said there is no place they wouldn't go for their child....um. Maybe rethink that depending on who or what they are. Just sayin'. A fantastic rich tapestry of Hell and horror. Very highly recommended.
