From the early days of her life when she didn’t really want to play music to living her best life with her music, author Birgit Matzerath does not hold anything back in sharing her story with readers. When Birgit came to the USA, a music teacher helped her fall in love with the piano and another helped her realize that the talent she has is very rare. She just wanted to lead the best life with her music, but life had other plans for her. From a troubled life at home to trying to find love in a marriage that was never meant to be, Birgit tries to find herself and her music. Music had always been her constant and when she needed it the most, it came back to her and showed her that it was always there for her, waiting for her to call it back.
More than the World in Black and White: How Music Came Alive and My Life Became Music by Birgit Matzerath is the wonderful story of a woman’s journey of how she took charge of her life to find something that she truly loves. This memoir is a retelling of how Birgit Matzerath found peace and love in the music she creates. She details the trials and tribulations which she had to go through to be able to become content with her life, the piano and the music she makes. Her life wasn’t pretty and it wasn’t what one would expect from an exchange student from Germany. The narrative is smooth, flows impressively and talks to the reader rather than just stating some facts. I actually connected with Birgit, understood her, cheered her on and wanted her to succeed just as much as she did. Inspiring and enlightening!
