More Than Evil by Bil Richardson kicks off when a coal miner makes a mistake and opens the gates of hell—literally. A small-town sheriff suddenly has his hands full as one disaster after another befalls the people he is sworn to protect. But, how does one protect another when the cause of the trouble is completely unknown and damned near impossible to stop? The sheriff's only help comes from his daughter and a young man, in love with his daughter, who hates the sheriff for an adulterous affair with his mother. The sheriff's dilemma reminds me of the adage: "It's hard to remember that the goal was to drain the swamp when you're up to your neck in alligators."
Bil Richardson has a writing style that cuts to the chase with an ever-increasing pace and a labyrinth of surprises. I'm a bit fanatical when it comes to verisimilitude in fiction, regardless of the genre. However, there are stories whereby realism would just get in the way… and this is one of them. The creature that escapes from hell and the spawn of that creature is beyond my experience in horror writing and that makes any sense of realism or situational reality obsolete. Some readers will object to the violence, the blood, and gore but I believe every reader will be captured by the ever-changing events and surprise twists and turns leading to a satisfactory conclusion. I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend More Than Evil to all horror story fans for its fast pace, surprises, and the truly unusual and surrealistic antagonists.
