Mika Dika: Foster Kid is a well-written children's book by T.L. Blythers. Mika Dika as a very young child is taken into custody and placed in many different foster homes as she is growing up. This book details her experiences in foster homes and the desire to be part of a normal family. She must overcome the challenges of bad foster homes and face bullies who label her as 'unwanted.'
This children's book is very sad, yet inspiring and meaningful. It tugged at my heart-strings, yet gave me an awareness of foster children and everything they have to do to survive. Mika Dika is a very strong girl who never gives up, always holding onto her strength and resilience. Any child can relate to this story, either being a foster child themselves, or learning to be kind to a foster child and not being a bully. This is a small book with a very big meaning! It is easy for children of all ages to comprehend, and the illustrations are done beautifully and true to life. My daughter also read this book with me, and she really enjoyed it. She asked many questions about foster children: How does a child get sent into foster care? Do they get adopted? What happens to them if they don't get adopted? It opened up a great dialogue between us, and she now has an understanding of foster care children and all the challenges and emotions they feel. I believe that this book should truly be used in all grade school classrooms and can be a great tool for discussion and acceptance.
