In author Michael Fulkerson’s Mercy in America, we find ourselves following the protagonist, Lane, as he embarks on a mission at the age of twelve from Joppa to find his father. The year is 1734 and Lane encounters many struggles during his quest, including slave traders, and he uses the power of prayer to help him to survive throughout. The story is a rip roaring tale that jumps from one adventure to the next as Lane fights to find his dad. Lane meets many new people on his journey, some friends and some foes, and he uses the power of the Lord to try to effect change in them all.
Mercy in America shows a lot of promise in the genre of Christian fiction. Michael Fulkerson’s character development skills are strong, and you’ll find yourself truly rooting for young Lane and his mission. Those with a strong Christian background will appreciate Lane’s reliance on prayer and God’s guidance during his trials and tribulations. Readers who enjoy Christian fiction with a strong sense of mission, action/adventure novels, or those who enjoy reads about the evils of the slave trade would enjoy this book. I think Mr. Fulkerson’s writing shows a lot of promise, and I certainly hope he continues to endeavor in this work. It’s clear that he has a real zeal to share the word of the Lord, and his work has led to a very worthwhile read.
