Megan Saves The Kittens is an animal picture book for children written and with photographs by Pamela Foland. Megan Thompson’s life changed dramatically when she discovered four day-old kittens that had been abandoned. Her parents were reluctant to allow her to care for them as they felt Megan wasn’t mature enough to handle what promised to be an intensive and time-consuming job. She did, finally, get them to agree to let her try, and they all went to their local pet store and bought supplies. As they grew, she and her parents noticed how each kitten had its own personality and behaved differently. Her parents remarked that even though they were all different, they still got along and had fun together. Megan knew they were thinking about how she and her brother sometimes didn’t agree on stuff. Better yet, her parents said that she had matured along with her kittens, and their pride in her made this marvelous change in her life even better.
Megan Saves The Kittens is written for a younger audience than her children’s series, Megan’s World, but I’m certain that anyone who has followed that series will love reading this book and looking at the amazing photographic journal Foland kept when she discovered and cared for the four kittens who inspired these books. I loved seeing the new perspective of Megan being actively involved in the process of bottle-feeding those very young kittens and appreciated how Foland brought Megan’s parents into the story. Foland shares so much about her kittens and their developing personalities that it makes it hard not to get involved.
Megan Saves The Kittens is an excellent book to share with children who have cats or are about to adopt a new kitten. This book is filled with information on kitten care, their needs and their desire for interaction with their human family. Understanding that each cat has its own personality, needs and behavior is so important as Foland clearly demonstrates with her analysis of each of her Munchkins. Megan Saves The Kittens is most highly recommended.
