"Mechanic of Fortune" is the story of private detective James Terrel. It opens with a preface that presents the concept of human duality. Borrowing heavily from Stevenson's "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and other literary sources, Peter Bollington's detective plot is peppered with his thoughts about the present state of our society. What is initially a search for a missing person becomes an assassination assignment that veers into the morbid and the comical. This develops when Terrel meets Virona Ruth and falls in love with her. Hitting the road in his 1967 Chevrolet called Boris and traveling all over California, he goes into a series of adventures where we get a picture of the desperate state of things in California in particular and our world in general.
More than anything else, "Mechanic of Fortune" is a satirical novel and a commentary on what is happening in our world today. It is funny and compelling at the same time, and the author hints at the direction we need to take to fix the ills of our society. When we go with James Terrel in his travels, we meet characters like the reformists, the arrogant and the rich, the villains and doctors with vested interests. The novel's colorful characters also include controversial politicians like Saddam Hussein, Richard Cheney and literary personalities Jekyll and Hyde and Joseph K. who is inspired by one of Kafka's characters. This is an unusual literary device where the reader gets to follow a man's journey through a country that is divided by economic strife and not sure of its political orientation. Bollington is an excellent storyteller with an eye for witty dialogue, which provides realism in the strange world that he has created. His critiques and observations show a sensitivity that is a mark of a gifted author.
