What could go wrong on Halloween with a fat, messy cat in the house? Find out with Meatball, the furry protagonist of Meatball's Adventurous Appetite by Fei Zheng-Ward. He lives with the Jones family, and when he sees that Mrs. Jones has just taken some delicious chicken nuggets out of the oven, he cannot resist. While waiting for them to be ready, Meatball accidentally knocks over a flashlight and casts a shadow of himself and his blanket onto the wall, appearing as a ghost. At that moment, the Jones children, wearing their Halloween costumes and carrying Jack-o-lantern candy buckets, see the shadow and get scared. Meatball gets scared, too, because the children are covering their faces with the buckets. How will this adventure end?
I adore cats and Halloween, so I had high expectations of this book. Meatball's Adventurous Appetite did not disappoint me; I consider it one of the funniest Halloween stories I have ever read. I like how Fei Zheng-Ward portrays the furry pet because he looks funny from the first page. I love how Meatball's attempt to eat the chicken nuggets is interwoven with the three kids' fear of the ghost-like shadow; it is like reading two stories in one. The events are exhilarating, and it is exciting to find out if the cat will eat the nuggets and if the children will solve the mystery. If you know young readers who love Halloween and have a soft spot for cats, this is the perfect book for them.
