Maya and Filippo Learn about Careers in Dunedin by Alinka Rutkowska is a delightful story book for children with a beautiful concept and message as well for readers. Maya and Filippo live on their cruise ship, Fun Princess, with their parents and cat, Otello. In this particular story, they are cruising in New Zealand and docking at Dunedin. The children spend the morning at the ship's youth club, indulging in exciting activities. The club leader is finding out what the kids want to become when they grow up. While Maya is having trouble in deciding, Filippo says he wants to work in a chocolate factory and eat all the delicious treats!
The book takes readers on a sightseeing trip around Dunedin. The story introduces children to new careers, places, ideas and concepts. The illustrations are bright and colorful and they complement the story beautifully. They breathe life into the characters and give pace and movement to the scenes. The story passes on a very important message that nothing is impossible and anyone can be anything they dream of. The quiz at the end of the story is interactive and helps children reflect on the story. I recommend this series of Maya and Filippo's adventure trips to all kids. Parents can use them as bedtime story books and school libraries and classrooms will also benefit from the stories if used for their read aloud sessions.
