Maximum Rossi: A Las Vegas Crime Noir by Paul W. Papa is a mystery novel that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat until the very end. Despite being the son of a mob boss, Massimo “Max” Rossi had some morality left. He went to Las Vegas for a bachelor’s party, but he stayed there for himself. He loved the glitz, the showgirls, and the high life of Las Vegas. However, his extended stay in the city was not sitting well with the other resident mobsters. When Max is invited to participate in a high-stakes poker game, things go seriously awry. An altercation leads to him knocking a man unconscious, who turns up dead the next morning. He had no idea how the man died, he certainly didn’t kill him, and the only person who could prove his innocence was gone. Was there any way for him to get out of this mess? Or was Max going to become a casualty of the Las Vegas mob?
Perfect for crime fiction enthusiasts, this brilliantly composed and executed novel had me hooked from the very beginning. Max’s aura was dangerous yet very calm; he understood the level of his impact yet he tried his best to keep it all under control. The background of Maximum Rossi was mesmerizing and very interesting. The setting was nicely done, it is believable and rather fascinating to read. The chase to find the real killer was intense yet very entertaining. Max was a believable character, he had me following his every move and anticipating what would happen next. For the life of me, I could not guess what would happen next in the story. Paul W. Papa kept me guessing and wanting more. Everything was perfect about this story. The pace, the development of the story, the character’s arc, the flow, and even the descriptions were perfect. This is a well-rounded novel that I would highly recommend.
