Maven: The Reclamation is a work of fiction in the social issues, action, and adventure subgenres and serves as the opening installment of the Maven Chronicles series. It is aimed at young adult readers and was penned by author F.C. Nolan. The book follows teenager Mavis as she urgently seeks refuge in the middle of an America at war with itself. As the political and social divide within the country reaches boiling point and violence begins to become commonplace, Mavis must make a 600-mile pilgrimage in order to find safety for herself and her friends, but the journey ahead is not for the faint of heart.
It’s a difficult task to lay the groundwork for a planned series of stories. Telling a complete and satisfying story that establishes characters for the saga ahead and leaves room for future installments to develop is a tightrope that many such novels struggle with. Not so here, with author F.C. Nolan building a world that feels very close to home and creating obstacles and threats for Mavis’ journey that starts with a great deal of peril and then constantly finds refreshing ways to raise the stakes. Mavis herself is an excellent protagonist who brings readers into the story with great proficiency, showing us the world of Maven piece by piece and making sure we understand the things that are different from ours. Her relatability as she overcomes the dangers in her journey is one of the great strengths of the novel and serves the story well, ensuring that Maven is a read which will keep the reader invested in her story from beginning to end.
