Mango! Mango! A Dog. Two Parrots. And Snowballs by Scott Ferrell is wonderfully charming and fun to read. First, I will compliment the author for taking care in the use of illustrations. They are properly placed so that they also "tell" the story. A strong appeal is that they aren't clip-art or the Photoshopped pictures that seem to be prevalent in so many self-published books. Ferrell's illustrations are colorful and cheerful and the author obviously knows the importance of using primary colors in books for children. Ferrell really gets it when writing for young readers. Not only is the story cute (okay, it's adorable), but the story is written in such an important way for children -- with word repetition. This makes the story not only fun for children, but the word repetition aids in word recognition, hence, a great learning experience.
Needless to say, as an adult (but kid at heart), this is a book I can read over and over again and never tire of it. I find the educational aspect of the story to be a big plus for parents who want to teach their children words in a fun way. The story has a nice meter to it so that it's fun to read aloud. Teachers should take note as it would be a perfect read-aloud book for story time to incorporate with learning. I'm not going to spoil the plot, but I will say that the characters are lovable and fun. Mango! Mango! A Dog. Two Parrots. And Snowballs is a great book for preschoolers and young readers. I highly recommend it to both parents and teachers.
