Mama’s Hands by Olena Palatnik is the true story of her mother’s battle with cancer. Olena’s mother, Iryna Dovgan, was an accomplished chemist (Ph.D.), Professor, and Head of the Chemistry & Ecology Department at the Construction and Architecture Academy. She loved her job and was fulfilled by it. She was a beauty in her early sixties. It began with mood swings and then hair loss. By late 2015, a dormant and painless hygroma started growing and became painful after she fell. Biopsies were done, and the result was stage 4 sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma, with metastases in the lungs. Life as they knew it went downhill from there. Olena and her mother were launched into the harsh reality and cut-throat methods of the medical world. Navigating their way through these obstacles will create two of the strongest women ever!
Mama’s Hands by Olena Palatnik is a heart-wrenching tale of love, pain, grief, choices, lessons, and more. The realization that you’ve lost a loved one even while they’re still alive is unbearable. This is what Olena and her mother had to deal with for years, yet they remained resilient. This book also exposes the uncompassionate side of medicine. It’s painful that a call to serve humanity has devolved into a money-grabbing venture for greedy individuals in the medical and pharmaceutical sectors. I wanted a face-off with that master-of-the-universe doctor and the nurse because I couldn’t bear their insensitivity. Olena narrated her story beautifully, and I enjoyed a sobering read. In the end, we must invest in our health and positive relationships as much as we nurture our passions. The former stay with us till the end of our time.
