I recently finished Malefactor: First Of The Fallen by David G. Hernández, and it’s one of those books that surprised me in the best way. The story dives into a cosmic world where the lines between Chaos and Order are constantly shifting, making for a thrilling and intense ride. We follow the Traveler, a character who seems lost but is navigating a vast, dark universe teetering on the edge of annihilation. Along the way, he encounters all sorts of incredible and terrifying forces that challenge his understanding of creation and destruction. What stood out to me was how Hernández weaves in elements of mythology and existential questions, creating a story both deep and thought-provoking. It reminded me of the cosmic horror of Lovecraft, the philosophical depth of Gaiman, and the epic world-building of Frank Herbert’s Dune. It’s a fascinating mix that kept me hooked from start to finish.
Hernández’s writing is just fantastic—vivid and haunting in a way that makes you feel like you’re right there in the universe he’s created. The plot moves at a deliberate pace, which lets you really immerse yourself in the story. The action scenes are intense and packed with meaning, making each one feel like it truly matters. The characters, especially Malefactor, are complex and compelling, pulling you into their struggles and making you reflect on some big questions. Even though I don’t usually read graphic novels or cosmic fiction, this one caught my attention and didn’t let go. It’s a smart, beautifully written story that challenges you and sticks with you long after you’ve finished it. Plus, the dedication at the beginning had me laughing—it’s those little touches that make this book special. If you’re in the mood for something different and thought-provoking, I definitely recommend giving this one a try.
