Vihang A. Naik was born in Surat, Gujarat on September 2, 1969. He is India's contemporary poet writing in English. His poems have appeared in literary journals and anthologies along with some significant e-publications. Four collections of his poetry have been published: Poetry Manifesto: New & Selected Poems (2010), Making A Poem (2004), City Times and Other Poems (1993). His Gujarati collection of poems include Jeevangeet (Gujarati Poems) in 2001, dedicated to the cause of victims of Gujarat Earthquake of January 26, 2001. He also translates poetry written in the Gujarati language into English, including his own Gujarati language poems. He is educated from The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda with English Literature, Indian Literature in English Translation and Philosophy. He had his primary schooling from Navrachna in Baroda, besides other local schools. He took teaching as a profession serving in colleges since 1996 in Gujarat. His City Times and Other Poems enters Limca Book of Records in 2016. After his retirement he lives and works in Baroda,Gujarat. India.

Making a Poem by Vihang A. Naik is a collection of poems that sheds light on the poet’s observations of life and living. The author’s observations of life and his surroundings have been expressed in verses that are stark, simple, and neat. The poems in the collection speak about the creativity and aesthetic side of the poet. The clever wordplay and imagery in the poems give a peek into the poet’s vision and his expressions, making the collection insightful and profound. The poems are thought-provoking and they capture the poet’s thinking process. The effective word painting in his writings are fascinating to poetry lovers and will make them wonder ‘how poetry makes a poet’?
I liked the poems for their minimalist style. They say a lot of things in a few words, making the impact strong and palpable to readers. It is good to look at life through the eyes of the poet and experience it from his perspective, giving it a new meaning every time. Every poem has its own charm; hence it is difficult to say which one is my favorite as each poem speaks about a different aspect of life and looking at it. I like the word play in ‘The Poem Comes Alive’ and how the poet injects life into it with some clever wordplay. ‘Winter Pen’ captures the chill of the season and metaphorically weaves it into the momentary mood of the poet, making the bluntness tangible. This collection is definitely a must-read for all poetry lovers.
