Love's Sweet Return by Krystal M. Anderson takes place in Oregon in 1869. Charlotte is the daughter of a wealthy merchant who has promised her to a business acquaintance. Charlotte is sent by ship to be married to this stranger, but the ship is lost in a violent storm. Charlotte, the only survivor, is found on the beach near a lighthouse. Max, the lighthouse keeper who finds her, happens to also be the man that Charlotte loves, but who left her because her father did not approve. Charlotte is stranded at the lighthouse until the monthly visit of the lighthouse tender that brings supplies. At the same time, people in the nearest settlement send a rescue party to find out if the lighthouse was destroyed during the storm and if the lighthouse keeper is all right. The rescue party struggles with thick brush since the usual path is closed by a mudslide. During the rescue operation, there is suspense when two men who are stealing logs turn their guns on the rescuers.
I thoroughly enjoyed Love's Sweet Return by Krystal M. Anderson. I appreciated the humor, such as when they tried to lift the bell into place and they and it fell. I liked the descriptive words that helped me visualize the setting, such as “the mudslide topped with debris looked like frosting and candles on a birthday cake.” I feel like I now know more about the northwest coastline and what it is like to work in a lighthouse. I was excited about the suspense when the men with guns started shooting. It was easy to imagine the settings, when the author said, “the mist was thick as clouds.” The characters in the story were realistic. I would be happy to read more books by this author.
