Love and Ink by Kiana Donae is a collection of poems that reveals the personal and intimate view of the author on life, loss, love, virtue and many other emotions. It speaks directly to readers without any shortcuts. The emotions are intense, unapologetic and provocative, making them a powerful and bold read. They cover a wide range of emotions from sensuality to excitement and intrigue, and also tackle difficult topics like rape, bullying etc., making it easy for readers to connect with them. The poet's views are insightful and profound in a way that readers are able to comprehend and accept them.
All the poems are simple and not too wordy. 'I Write' is a poem that is very personal and reveals a part of the poet; her reasons to pen poems seem genuine and will motivate readers to try writing one. 'Positively Me' is an inspiring poem that delves into a positive way of living and shows the poet's dislike for negative people and situations. The wordplay and inner thoughts are effective and each poem has its own emotional depth and identity. The topics of rape, feminism and sexuality have been handled very subtly, giving them more power while reading. It is indeed a powerful collection of poems that will make readers want to read them again. The choice of language, use of metaphors and the topics tackled make this collection an enjoyable read.
