Lord Difficult is Book 3 in Eileen Putman's Maitland's Rogues series of Regency romances featuring Andrew Maitland's squad of dangerous rogues who once did England’s dirty work in the Napoleonic Wars. They’re all edge, no softness, and love? Not even on their radar until it blindsides them. And blindside it does, at least it does for Robert Tavish who is sent to discover if Emmaline Stanhope is the woman she advertises herself to be; a matchmaker. This rogue hires Emmaline to find him a bride all with ulterior motives. Knowing she's got her work cut out for her as the man can't dance, has no desire to partake in polite conversation, and wants nothing to do with anyone but get back to his rocks, Emmaline's desperation to take care of her aunt pushes her to press on under desperate circumstances. When her life is threatened, he rescues her and whisks her off to his uncle's home in Scotland where he spills some dark, cryptic secrets that have Emmaline wondering if she’s supposed to be the beauty who can actually take on this beast.

Eileen Putman’s Regency romance delivers a captivating tale that was impossible for me to put down. I found the pace spot-on with a seamless flow that kept me hooked all night from one page to the next. The main characters shine. Robert the beast is grumpy yet unwavering in his sense of honor and duty, while it’s obvious the heroine Emmaline Stanhope, once a burst of sunshine, has been hardened by life’s trials but remains resilient and fiercely independent. She’s a fighter who won’t back down, making her journey as compelling as it is inspiring. Their banter and clashes sparked with chemistry, reminding me of my own when dating my husband. The delightful supporting cast kept things lively, helping to add to the humor, such as the aunt and valet. With a clever twist on the Beauty and the Beast theme, Lord Difficult kept me surprised and engaged as I wondered what would happen next. With the intriguing plot and realistic characters, the author knows what it takes to write an entertaining historical romance for readers like me. Fans of Regency romances will be smitten. I can’t wait to hunt down her first two books in this series!
