In Look At Me by Audrey Beth Stein, we are introduced to a group of children whose likes are different from others. Some children want to feel glamorous while others just want to fit in. Some girls like skirts while others prefer pants or leggings. Some kids don’t like what their parents want them to wear and others are okay with it. Some parents let their children wear whatever they please.
Look At Me is a fun yet informative story. A lot of children grow up following gender roles and what is considered masculine and feminine. This book is a great example of how to break these chains that tell us who or what we should be based on gender. This book stands for all of the above, yet is written in a way that is easy for children to comprehend. Also, the illustrations are very well done, making it easy for the young reader to follow along. I love the overall message which is that each child is unique in their own way and they don’t have to conform to gender roles.
Stein has shown us that there is absolutely nothing wrong with a boy wanting to wear a dress or put nail polish on just as there is no shame in a girl who wants to dress up in boys' clothes. I feel that people seem to find no trouble in girls wearing clothing like baggy pants and sweatshirts, yet frown upon a boy wearing items that are considered feminine. Audrey Beth Stein tackles this issue head-on but in a way that children can understand. The author has done an excellent job and I look forward to reading more of her work.
